The Oddity of Orchids: a talk by Professor Kingsley Dixon
January 22, 2022 –
In this talk, Professor Kingsley Dixon will look at the evolutionary twists and turns that orchids have adopted over 80 million years to help them achieve their astounding abundance of more than 35,000 species.
Orchids range from the miniscule, with flowers the size of ants, to towering giants like Singapore’s Tiger Orchid that weighs in at up to 5 tonnes. The most extraordinary of all flowering plants however, is the leafless Western Australian Underground Orchid which uses sexual deception to lure pollinating insects.
Join us and Professor Kingsley Dixon for a glass of wine and nibbles to celebrate the finalists in the 2021 York Botanic Art Prize and the announcement of the winner of the People's Choice Award.
Fee $20 + bf. Tickets strictly limited and pre-booking essential.
