TEDxPerth Countdown: WA Climate Leadership Summit
November 25, 2020 –
Over two-hundred of our State’s most motivated climate changemakers will come together on 25 November 2020 at the State Reception Centre in Kings Park.
TEDxPerth aims to stimulate new action by bringing together ambitious, future-focused people from every field, including business, government, finance, campaigning and research. Capacity is strictly limited and we welcome applications to attend. Being on our mailing list means you receive this priority opportunity to apply, before application is opened to the public.
This special event is part of TED’s global Countdown initiative, championing and accelerating solutions to the climate crisis. Across our planet, Countdown aims to build a better future by halving global greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 in the race to a zero-carbon world – a world that is safer, cleaner and fairer for everyone.
This is just the start. TEDxPerth Countdown begins a 12-month focus supporting WA’s leaders of climate change action. We’re stronger together.

First Speakers Announced
Fiona Stanley AC is a vocal advocate for the needs of children and their families, including the particular damage they suffer, and will suffer, from climate change. Named Australian of the Year in 2003, Professor Fiona Stanley was the founding Director of the Telethon Kids Institute, is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science and the UNICEF Australian Ambassador for Early Childhood Development.
Brendan Hammond is helping deliver the Pilbara's 26GW Asian Renewable Energy Hub, the largest power station in the world. This ground-breaking project sets a new global standard for reducing emissions at scale. Brendan will explain how it will succeed through a holistic approach to sustainability; commercial, social and cultural – and how you can do the same to lead your projects to greater effectiveness.
Chantal Caruso is Director, Policy and Research for Clean State, which advocates for action on climate change and jobs in WA. Too often it seems reducing emissions will damage the economy and is an impossible task. The good news is the opposite is true. A zero-carbon economy is achievable and the solutions and support for it already exist here in WA – and Chantal will describe how we get there!
Christiana Figueres was Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change 2010-2016 and instrumental in delivering the 2015 Paris Climate Accord. She is the co-founder of Global Optimism, co-author of The Future We Choose: Surviving the Climate Crisis and a TED Countdown speaker. Based in her home country Costa Rica, Christiana will contribute on screen about the necessity of stubborn optimism.
David Carter wants to do the right thing. But, like every Chief Executive, he is obligated to protect his business and its shareholders. David will explain how he has led Austral Fisheries, with turnover of $130m, to become one of Australia's first carbon neutral businesses. If you want to get your organisation sustainable, David's insights will be invaluable.
Jeff Hansen is the Managing Director of Sea Shepherd Australia. To tackle the climate emergency we'll need to work together, leaving our preconceptions of each other at the door. Under his leadership, Sea Shepherd has co-operated with many organisations and governments in unlikely alliances to achieve common goals. By seeing how practical good comes from pragmatic partnerships, you'll be emboldened to collaborate with unexpected partners.
Meri Fatin joins TEDxPerth as Guest Curator. Organising a Perth visit from Christiana Figueres, the chief architect of the Paris Climate Agreement, led to many conversations with West Australians dedicated to driving accelerated climate action and searching for real commitment in the corridors of power. Meri’s vision has been to facilitate a cohesive and powerful network that can realise the most profound wish of Western Australians, a recovery led by renewables and environmental care.
