Living Soil Exposed – Microbes and Organic Gardening
September 9, 2020 –
Soil microbes are essential to healthy soil and healthy soil is essential to healthy plants - this is the International Year of Plant Health. Let's get acquainted with our wonderful living soil in this interactive session.
Ellen Walker and the EarthWhile team, love to share their enthusiasm to develop knowledge about the microbes in soil food webs and their importance in growing good food. Microbes build soil structure, retain moisture, make nutrients available, resist pests and diseases and break down toxins. How? Let’s find out. They will show people how to identify the soil food web microbes when they look at a sample of soil through a microscope (which they will bring along); discuss the conditions and foods the different microbes like, and how we can use that information to influence the types of plants we want to grow. Ellen and the team are keen to pass on this information so people can develop and nurture their own healthy soil.
They do this through onsite consultations, workshops, and presentations to public groups. Ellen has been a guest speaker at numerous garden events, a guest of Sabrina Hahn and Deryn Thorpe on their respective podcasts, and along with the EarthWhile team, was awarded Peel ESTEAM 2019 Champions and named as a finalist in the Science Communicator of the Year. They feel privileged to have their work acknowledged by a range of academics, sustainability 'experts', ecologists and the people who have participated in their presentations and workshops.
The meeting is on September 9th at 7:00 pm in the Roleystone Family Centre, 19 Wygonda Rd, Roleystone. Entry $3. Enquiries to Lisa 9399 2312. PLEASE NOTE NEW START TIME OF 7pm
