Influencing Policy with Science: A Cautionary Tale
October 26, 2021 –
Dr. Tom Hatton has enjoyed an impactful career in environmental science and policy. As a scientist and executive with CSIRO, Dr. Hatton oversaw national marine, water, and energy research programs, and was awarded the CSIRO Chairman’s Medal and the Australian Public Service Medal for his contributions. From 2015-2020, Dr. Hatton became the Chair of the Western Australia Environmental Protection Authority and has chaired or served on many other committees, boards, and inquiries relating to environmental and scientific issues.
In this lecture, Dr. Hatton will review and reflect on strategies and tactics that researchers might employ (or not employ) in their endeavours to influence public policy, based on the relevant literature and his own experiences. Before the lecture, attendees are encouraged to have a look at:
- Einstein’s 1939 letter to President Roosevelt
- Salience, Credibility, Legitimacy and Boundaries: Linking Research, Assessment and Decision Making by David Cash et al. (2003), Kennedy School of Governance, Harvard University
