Growing Your Own Food from Seed
April 14, 2021 –
With summer finally giving way to autumn and so many people wanting to grow their own food, there’s no better time to start growing vegetable, herbs, flowers etc . At this time last year, when the pandemic hit us, people were scrambling to buy seeds and seedlings and in many cases it was impossible to buy seedlings! So, why not come to the April meeting of Roleystone Organic Growers and start some punnets of your own.
For success in growing vegetables and herbs, it is important to time the planting of seeds and seedlings to take advantage of seasonal conditions most favourable for their growth. The marvellous thing about autumn is that it is a good time that you can put in those seeds that thrive in the winter.
When you sow vegetables from seed in punnets/trays, it gives you an enormous choice of different varieties-you may like to bring some of the following seeds to be sure you sow what you want to grow: Beetroot, Broccoli, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Kohlrabi, Kale, Silverbeet, Spinach, Leeks, Lettuce, Parsley, Early White onions., Chives, Chinese Cabbage, Radish, Swedes, Mustard, Turnips, Coriander, Rocket, Mizuna, Pak Choy to name a few.
We will have seed from our seed bank for sale at $1.50 per packet. These seeds have mostly been grown locally under our local conditions, which is a huge advantage.
If you decide to purchase seed, we suggest planting organic non-hybrid or heirloom seeds, as you can then save the seeds for the future. These can be either purchased at local retailers or online.
Please bring all you need to get your seeds into soil: Seeds, trowel, gloves, punnets, trays, plant tags/labels, a mask, and a permanent marking pen. We will provide Organically Certified Seed Raising Mix.
The meeting is on Wednesday April 14th @ 7.00pm in the Roleystone Family Centre, 19 Wygonda Rd, Roleystone. Entry still $3. Enquiries to Lisa 9399 2312.
