Permaculture is an approach to designing landscapes which mimic the patterns and relationships found in nature, while yielding an abundance of food, fibre and energy for local needs. You will discover that not a lot of space is needed to design a productive garden that looks as good as it tastes and helps create a more sustainable environment.
Across the two days you will spend time in the classroom as well as getting your hands dirty with practical work in the gardens at Perth City Farm. You will learn all about:
Permaculture ethics, principles, zones, elements and functions.
Small space growing solutions
Growing bed preparation and planting
Theory and practice: soil, soil biology, compost and worm farming
Retrofitting where you live
Plant propagation
You’ll leave with: A jar of worms, new friends and oodles of inspiration and enthusiasm

Rod has worked nearly three decades in environmental management. In recent years he has turned his attention to permaculture learning and how this system of thinking can create new and critical connections between people, the environment and the food we eat. Rod has completed a Permaculture Design Certificate, Advanced Permaculture Design Certificate and Diploma of Permaculture and uses these skills as the Farm Manager at Perth City Farm. Rod’s motto is “be nice and grow things” and believes that being kind to each other, looking after mother earth and ensuring fair share is critical to our survival.About Perth City Farm
Perth City Farm is a central urban farm that supports connected, sustainable communities. Established on a former industrial site in East Perth, this polluted site has been lovingly rehabilitated by volunteers to become a Western Australian icon for environmental sustainability and community engagement. Dr Claire Greenwell is the Citizen Science Manager at the Conservation Council of Western Australia and Convenor of the WA Fairy Tern Network.Claire recently completed her PhD investigating the life history, ecology and population dynamics of the Australian Fairy Tern and implications for their conservation.
At this event, she will be presenting findings from her research, and discussing the efforts being made by the WA Fairy Tern Network to conserve these vulnerable coastal seabirds.
This is a free event and light refreshments will be provided.
Come along and hear about the latest research and on-ground activities being used to protect Fairy Terns in WA!

This is an important time to reflect on the nuclear industry and Australia's role in it - and we can't think of two better people to do that with!
Here in Western Australia we are edging dangerously close to having one operating uranium mine, and are watching yet another community fight yet another proposal for a national radioactive waste dump. Nationally we are discussing the possibility of nuclear submarines, and facing the realities of a $2.2 billion clean-up at Ranger uranium mine. Globally there is a mounting push for a new generation of nuclear power, Russia has weaponised nuclear power in war, tensions are rising, and there is now an international treaty to abolish nuclear weapons.

The aim is to promote ways to engage in current citizen science projects and to discuss successful engagement strategies and project outcomes.We have a great line-up of outstanding citizen science practitioners and educators with presentations ranging from Astronomy to Molluscs, Birds and more.
In particular, we are interested in presenting pathways to secondary and tertiary educational opportunities. Each talk will be around 15 minutes in length with a 5-minute discussion. We plan to finish with an open discussion session.There will be a 30-minute break between the two sessions to allow time for refreshment and discussion with speakers and ACSA-WA committee members.

Come and learn from Robyn at 'Waste is my Resource' about earth-cycling using bokashi bins & composting systems.
Earth-cycling is nature’s way of recycling – it’s the process of turning natural scraps (think food scraps, leaves and paper) into nutrient-rich compost which will help your garden and soil thrive.
By composting or using a bokashi bucket at home Kwinana residents significantly reduce the amount of waste they send to landfill.
Kwinana residents have the option to buy a bokashi bin and two bags of bokashi mix from the City administration building for only $50 either before or after the workshop.
After completing the workshop, residents also have the option to buy twin compost bins and receive a $60 rebate upon proof of purchase and residence (attendance of the workshop is required to be eligible for the rebate)
Please bring along a reusable cup and/or water bottle. Coffee, tea and light refreshments are provided.

Please note: Repair capabilities and capacity is determined by the available volunteers on the day.

She will share the changes she has made in her life to become more sustainable - both technological (water and power systems, solar passive house design. . . ) and behavioural (alternative cooperative living, compost systems, urban food production, goat herder. . . ). The Northern Jarrah Forests (NJF) are some of the most beautiful, diverse, and vulnerable forests on Earth with species diversity that ranks alongside tropical rainforests. But with changes in climate and a history of severe exploitation, they are on the brink of collapse.
International mining companies Alcoa and South32 are proposing to clear an additional 13,672 hectares over the next decade for bauxite mining, and Rio Tinto has applied for exploration licenses across a further 107,000 hectares of Northern Jarrah Forests. We must draw the line and protect what's left of the NJF!
You'll hear from WA Forest Alliance Convener Jess Beckerling and The Wilderness Society WA Campaigns Manager Patrick Gardner about the campaign and why we must stop the clearing of these ancient forests so they can remain as critical habitat for endangered wildlife and vital carbon stores.

Skilled volunteers will help you with repairs of bicycles, computers, electrical appliances, household items and textiles. If you're unsure, bring it down and we'll see what we can do!

- Only one item is repaired at a time - if you have multiple items, you'll need to join the queue again. This ensures everyone gets to be seen at least once by a Repairer.
- Please show your gratitude and respect for our Volunteer Repairer by staying with them for the duration of your repair - have a chat, you might learn a thing or two!
- We cannot guarantee a successful repair, however our Volunteer Repairers will do their best to help you free of charge with the time, tools and skills they have available. Advice will be provided if your item is unable to be repaired.

Microplastics in the size range from 100 um to 5 mm are ubiquitous in the environmental triad; soil, water and air. Application of plastic mulch film, compost and biosolids into agricultural soils induce a threat to soil physico-chemical and biological properties. Microplastics in the water environment may act as a vector transporting various pollutants from one place to another.
Microplastics can interact with antibiotics and there is a possibility of developing antibiotic microbial resistance in the environment. Municipal waste landfills, agricultural lands, and traffic acts as sources for atmospheric microplastics. X-press Pearl ship disaster is considered as the largest ever incident of microplastics released into the marine environment.
Microplastics and plastic additives such as plasticizers may end up in the food web, bioaccumulate and cause health risks. However, limited studies exist on the effect of microplastics in soil, water and air, where most of the literature focus on reporting the abundance and hence there are ample opportunities for research related to microplastic and environmental health.
