Beechboro Public Library332 Benara RdBeechboro,Kevin Smith from The Worm Shed presents on all aspects of worm farming and the role worms play in recycling and waste management. This is followed by a demonstration of setting up and maintaining a worm farm.
Residents and ratepayers of the City of Swan are entitled to a $115 subsidy on an advanced worm farm set-up or a $50 subsidy on 1kg of worms, both of which will be available for purchase on the day.

Herdsman Lake Discovery CentreCorner of Flynn and Selby StreetsWembley ,The WA Gould League and the WA Naturalists’ Club will be hosting a special Wildlife Show at the Herdsman Lake Discovery Centre and surrounds on Sunday 7 November from 11am - 4pm.
The Wildlife Show event brings together some amazing wildlife, environmental and indigenous organisations to promote our native wildlife and indigenous culture, provide interactive exhibits for the community to enjoy and offer families opportunities to re-connect with nature.
Throughout the day there will be wildlife & nature related exhibits, an indigenous smoking ceremony and dance group, face painting, art and craft stations, hands-on nature-based activities, live mural painting, as well as food trucks and coffee.

Almost 90% of all flowering plant species (400,000 in total) rely on animal pollinators, the behaviour of which has profound effects on plant mating. Although most plants are insect pollinated, more than 900 bird species pollinate members of ca. 500 of 13,500 vascular plant genera. Australia has over 110 bird species (mostly honeyeaters and lorikeets) that have been recorded visiting the flowers of >1,000 plant species from >64 genera, with many of these genera (Banksia, Grevillea, Eucalyptus, Adenanthos, Anigozanthos) highly diverse and abundant. These birds are often highly mobile generalists and locally abundant due to copious nectar production, leading to frequent aggressive interactions within and among species. The behaviour of these birds suggests extensive pollen carryover from more pollen donors compared with insects, resulting in higher seed set, higher paternal diversity and genetic benefits from wide outcrossing for the plants they pollinate.Dr Krauss and team are testing these predictions for plants pollinated by birds in Banksia woodlands of South Western Australia (SWA). SWA is not only an internationally recognised biodiversity hotspot, but an international hotspot for pollination by vertebrates. Here, 15% of its ca. 8,000 plant species, and 40% of threatened flora, are pollinated by nectarivorous birds and/or marsupials such as the honey possum. As such, the genetic consequences of vertebrate pollination are critical for understanding both the evolution of the flora and how best to conserve it.
The team is employing camera traps, selective pollinator exclusion experiments and genotyping of seeds to assess the impacts of different classes of visitors (birds, honey possums, insects) to the flowers of banksias, eucalypts and kangaroo paws. Results support the hypothesis that birds are critical pollinators with unique genetic consequences for the plants they pollinate. However, for the Catspaw, birds are critical but paternal diversity was unexpectedly low, which was found to be associated with infrequent visitation by its bird pollinators. This result demonstrates the conditions for which departures from predictions may occur.
However, in many cases, insects such as the introduced European honeybee are ineffective or inefficient pollinators for plants adapted to pollination by vertebrates. A clearer understanding of these impacts is highlighting the unique significance of pollination by birds and mammals in SWA, underpinning conservation of the unique pollinators of a diverse endemic flora.

Una Bell, artist, environmental enthusiast, and author will guide participants through the basics of botanical drawing.
Attendees will need to bring paper, ‘lead’ pencils, a pencil sharpener, eraser, ruler and coloured pencils (optional). No botanical drawing experience is required. This program is suitable for adults and young people aged 14 and over.

As a trained Dolphin Watcher, your monitoring reports will contribute to valuable research. Join one of the largest 'Citizen Scientist' cohorts in Australia and help us learn more about our resident dolphins and how they use the Riverpark.
A complimentary supper will be served upon arrival at 6pm with proceedings commencing at 6.30pm. Tickets are essential for this free event.

A Perma-blitz involves coming together as a group to help with a number of projects in another members yard. It is a great way to connect with your local permie community, share skills, and have fun!
In this event Leanne has been a long time member of Freo Permies, so we excited to be able to hold a blitz at her place (finally)!
Activities for the day aim to be centred around the 12 principles and projects for the day include:
- Learn how to create an IBC wicking bed and trellis fence using recycled materials
(Capture and Store Energy, obtain a Yield, Produce no waste)
- Set up a rain tank to harvest water from the roof
(Produce no waste, Capture and store energy)
- Establish and seperate the verge into productive beds
(Use edges and value the marginal, obtain a yield, value diversity)
- General tidy and harvest!We will have a range of activities for different abilities, ages, and interests and you will be fed well with a yummy morning tea and lunch provided (vegan with gluten free options).
Freo Permies activities and events also aim to be family friendly - so we welcome children, but please recognise you remain responsible for them at all times.

Nature Know How: Western Swamp Tortoises

Friends of the Western Swamp Tortoise group is an initiative of the Threatened Species Network, formed to aid awareness of this reptile, by providing information and educational resources.
Join a representative from the group to learn about Western Swamp Tortoises including their ecology and behaviour, and find out how you can help recovery activities.
Please note that this is a free program for ages 14+, and is a presentation without hands-on activities'. Photographs and videos may be taken of the event.
