Living Soil Exposed - Microbes and Organic Gardening
Roleystone Family Centre19 Wygonda Rd, RoleystoneRoleystone,Soil microbes are essential to healthy soil and healthy soil is essential to healthy plants - this is the International Year of Plant Health. Let's get acquainted with our wonderful living soil in this interactive session.
Ellen Walker and the EarthWhile team, love to share their enthusiasm to develop knowledge about the microbes in soil food webs and their importance in growing good food. Microbes build soil structure, retain moisture, make nutrients available, resist pests and diseases and break down toxins. How? Let’s find out. They will show people how to identify the soil food web microbes when they look at a sample of soil through a microscope (which they will bring along); discuss the conditions and foods the different microbes like, and how we can use that information to influence the types of plants we want to grow. Ellen and the team are keen to pass on this information so people can develop and nurture their own healthy soil.
They do this through onsite consultations, workshops, and presentations to public groups. Ellen has been a guest speaker at numerous garden events, a guest of Sabrina Hahn and Deryn Thorpe on their respective podcasts, and along with the EarthWhile team, was awarded Peel ESTEAM 2019 Champions and named as a finalist in the Science Communicator of the Year. They feel privileged to have their work acknowledged by a range of academics, sustainability 'experts', ecologists and the people who have participated in their presentations and workshops. The meeting is on September 9th at 7:00 pm in the Roleystone Family Centre, 19 Wygonda Rd, Roleystone. Entry $3. Enquiries to Lisa 9399 2312. PLEASE NOTE NEW START TIME OF 7pm

Intro to Permaculture Design
Perth City Farm1 City Farm PlaceEast Perth,This interactive and inspiring talk/ demonstration will give a brief introduction to permaculture and how we can use permaculture thinking in our homes, gardens and lives generally. We will look at permaculture ethics, design principles and some key ways grow good food, and to retrofit the way we live.
Permaculture is a way of thinking about and designing systems of living based on the ethics of care for the earth, care for people and sharing resources. It aims to learn from nature to allow us all to have abundant and connected lives, while restoring - rather than depleting - life supporting ecosystems. Permaculture informs what we do at City Farm, so for this session your Instructor and Farm Manager Rod will get you out in the City Farm garden to put some of these ideas into practice.
All equipment and materials are provided. This talk will be delivered to comply with current government health advice, maintaining distance between participants and good hygiene. Please bring your own pen and water bottle.
All this is set in the grounds of Perth City Farm, non-profit community environmental centre that provides space and opportunities to cultivate connection, and educates and enables all of us to live sustainably with nature.
Tickets $45
