Join Carla Weir and the team from Gaias Organic Gardens as they share with you all of the tips for building a successful organic garden.
The Gaias Organic Gardens Team have set up hundreds of vegetable gardens over the years, Right here in Perth. This isolated little city by the sea is like no other when it comes to growing food. With Long Harsh Summers, Strong winds and some of the worst soil on the planet you can see why so many of us struggle to grow food here in our part of the world. Carla Weir, Director of Gaias organic Gardens, has also been featured of the ABCME program Project Planet as a gardening mentor.
We share with you all of the trick and tips of the trade so that you can have wonderful fresh organic nutrient dense produce right at your back door.

About this Event
In this workshop you will make your own wiring jig and learn how to assemble 10 frames and embed the wax foundation. There will be a discussion and demonstration on various frame building options. We will break for morning tea and a chat.1. Make your own wiring jig
2. Learn how to make your own frame assembly jig.
3. Assemble your 10 frames using either nail gun, or using hammer and nails.
4. Discussion on variations of frames you can use
5. Wire up your 10 frames or attach centre bars and add a starter strip
6. Embed wax foundation. Discussion and demonstration on when and how to encourage drone comb.WHAT YOU WILL NEED
Bring or purchase on the day:
10 sheets of wax foundation
10 frames in kit form + eyelets
1 roll wire for the frames

The focus of this blitz will be to harvest the produce grown on the verge and the rest of the property, plantings, visit a productive permaculture property, and help and learn how to make an arch from materials grown in the garden. Morning Tea will be provided.
You will get to meet a lot of likeminded people and hopefully take home some of the produce. You are also welcome to take home cuttings from the garden but please ask first. If you would like to take home a banana pup then please bring a tub to transplant this in. Please ensure you are suitably dressed to participate in the activities on the day also bring gardening gloves and secateurs. Please email the organiser if you have any questions. Taeko's enthusiasm for Effective Microbes and using them to compost your waste into a high value product is infectious. Taeko has identified the most effective way to operate a Bokashi Composting System and will also explain how to make your own Bokashi mix, injecting the micro-organisms you need in this anaerobic composting system. Environment House volunteers have already done this workshop and everyone took a lot away from it, even those of us who have used a Bokashi system for many years.

OnlineDuring this session we will cover the basics of good solar house design using an easy to understand model house. We will cover orientation, ventilation, thermal mass, insulation, window furnishings . . . . and more!
You will then have the opportunity to apply that knowledge to evaluate how solar passive your current home is, and what you can do about it. You will be able to evaluate house plans and maybe make some of your own.
You will leave this session with a list of some simple changes you can make (even many that will cost you next to nothing) to make your home more sustainableThis workshop will be run online using zoom meetings. Once you have enrolled you will receive a link to join us in the days before the workshop - you do not need to have joined zoom to join in!
This workshop is not a webinar, so we will be seeing and interacting with each other. Make sure your audio and video are both working.
