Strategies to enhance carbon storage in subsoils
Strategies to enhance carbon storage in subsoilsMurdoch University90 South StMurdoch,
A SoilsWest Seminar Series discussing the latest research and applications in the world of soil science with Prof. Davey L. Jones.
In this talk I will identify the main factors that regulate subsoil C cycling and evaluate the mechanistic basis of subsoil interventions designed to promote greater C storage. I will evaluate the barriers and opportunities for the implementation of strategies to enhance subsoil C sequestration and identify 5 key current gaps in scientific understanding.
Due to their greater depth, subsoils in agricultural systems often contain more carbon (C) than the topsoil. Subsoils are therefore increasingly being recognised as having characteristics that offer substantial potential for long-term C sequestration. Due to our incomplete knowledge of C behaviour in the subsoil, but especially of its manageability, this potential has yet to be realised. Although a range of physical (e.g. deep ploughing), chemical (e.g. iron amelioration, biochar) and biological (e.g. deep-rooting crops) management strategies have been proposed to enhance subsoil C storage, these approaches have not been critically evaluated or compared.
Nature Know-how: Birds along the brook
Nature Know-how: Birds along the brookSusannah LakesLot 13440 Strawberry Hills DveGidgegannup,
Have you ever wondered what bird it is making THAT particular sound in your backyard?! Which species, what does it look like, what is its Noongar name, and what does its nest look like? And better still, what can you do to create habitat for it in your garden?
Join Perth Hills ornithologist Simon Cherriman for a guided nature-walk on Noongar Country at Susannah Brook Lakes in Gidgegannup. The walk will follow 1.5km of existing bush tracks and focus on teaching you how to spot and identify both ‘bush’ and water-bird species, and record and submit information using BirdLife Australia’s Birdata App.

How new technology is supporting mine rehabilitation
How new technology is supporting mine rehabilitationCORE Innovation Hub191 St George's TcePerth,
Welcome to Dendras' inaugural environmental networking event!
This is the first in a series of networking events for mining, regulators and environmental professionals to explore and discuss the advances of technology in mine rehabilitation and closure facilitated by Dendra Systems. We’re a global team of scientists, ecologists and engineers who work with the WA mining community to support them to reach their environmental goals and rehabilitate their land by combining decades of research in ecology and land restoration with cutting edge artificial intelligence and drone technologies, to enable faster, more efficient, transparent ecosystem restoration.
Our goal is to establish a networking forum to share insights, experiences and cross pollinate learnings with our industry peers on how technology and innovation is the mechanism to drive efficiencies for better environmental outcomes and ultimately improve operational outcomes and cost by reducing time to closure.
The free event will feature a panel session with 3-4 panelists and moderated by a journalist from Australian Mining. The panel will discuss various topics and experiences related to mine rehabilitation and closure, exploring how technology has advanced these disciplines to help restore our natural land.
