Incredible Edible; Urban farms of Perth
November 16, 2022 –
We’re marking national Urban Agriculture month by celebrating all the good food being grown in Perth right now. Join us to hear from diverse and unique urban food projects from across our city, working hard to improve our food security and build community.
They’ll be plenty of time for connecting with like-minded folks, displays and stalls from related businesses, and a cash bar. Chef Sophie Budd will whip up a delicious seasonal curry using some of City Farm’s own produce, which is available for pre-purchase ($15) with your entry ticket.
If you're keen to experience an urban farm first hand join us before the main forum event at 5 pm for a Twilight Farm Tour of Perth City Farm. Tickets to this part are $12.
This event is part of the ‘Learn Connect Grow’ series sponsored by the City of Perth, forum style events showcasing local sustainability or community initiatives and providing space for people to connect. All part of City Farm’s purpose of building connected communities living sustainably, and funds raised through this event help us do that.
Amy Warne – North Freo Social Farm
Amy is Farm and volunteer manager at North Freo Social Farm and has been in the role for three years. The Farm is a not-for-profit community market garden and is self funded based on a unique membership/pick your own model. We have regular crews of volunteers working in the field, plus volunteer board members working behind the scenes. The Farm is open Tuesday, Thursdays and Saturday mornings.
Elly Sumner – Coogee Common
Elly is a gardener in Coogee Common's permiculture farm-to-table garden. The garden was designed and created 4.5 years ago by the owners of The Common Group with the intention to grow food for the restaurant Bread In Common. They decided to refurbish the heritage building on the property and turn it into a restaurant and for the last 2 years the garden has served this restaurant primarily. Elly also maintains vegetables grown within the company at Gordon Street Garage and The Common Bakery. The garden uses organic, permiculture and regenerative agriculture techniques to work with the land and enrich the food grown. Coogee Common has garden tours daily at 11:30am run by Elly and the garden team.
George Stone – Black Dog Mushrooms
George has a background in pretty large scale organic veg farming, but has been growing mushrooms commercially in NSW for the past 2.5 years. Black Dog Mushrooms is a startup urban farm in Osborne Park, it’s run solely by George at the moment. He is utilising 70m2 to grow mainly oyster and lions mane mushrooms, with the plan to produce A LOT of mushrooms out of this small space. George uses sawdust and agricultural byproducts plus solar, no fertilisers, no pesticides, no fungicides, etc.
