Black Cockatoo Crisis - Fundraising Picnic

Black Cockatoo Crisis - Fundraising Picnic
Mahara Park85 Aldersyde RdPiesse Brook,SAVE THE DATE: BLACK COCKATOO CRISIS DOCUMENTARY FUNDRAISING PICNIC - SUNDAY JUNE 12th 1-5pm at our beautiful family property MAHARA PARK 85 Aldersyde Rd Piesse Brook.
There will be food and drinks, kids art workshops, real cockatoos, silent auction, live music and more surprises to be announced soon! Stay tuned!
BLACK COCKATOO CRISIS is a documentary being produced and directed by the award winning filmmaker Jane Hammond (Cry of the Forests - A Western Australian Story, A Crude Injustice).
The event is to raise funds to help complete the film as soon as possible. So far they have raised over $55,000 (35%) of the goal of $170,000! Every little bit helps.
Western Australia's iconic black cockatoos are in crisis. Their numbers have fallen dramatically over the past few decades and all three species in the south west of WA could become extinct in just 20 years unless something is done to protect their habitats. With the loss of the banksia woodlands on the Swan Coastal Plain to housing, Carnaby's Black Cockatoos have come to depend on the once vast exotic pine plantations on Perth's northern fringe.
These pine plantations supply up to half of all the food needed to keep the population of Carnaby's alive but these too are disappearing. Within the next two years the remaining 6000ha of pines are slated for clearing leaving the cockatoos facing possible starvation.
Meanwhile the Baudin's Black Cockatoos are literally being shot out of the sky in an unequal battle for food with apple and pear growers in Perth's hills. And the Red Tail Forest Black Cockatoos are under threat from the loss of nesting hollows and declining habitat.
Black Cockatoo Crisis looks at the plight of our special cockatoos and what we can do to stop these threatened species disappearing for ever. The clock is ticking on our black cockatoos. Will we save them in time?

Threatened Forests Tour - Northern Jarrah
DwellingupDwellingup,Join the WA Forest Alliance (WAFA) for a weekend tour of the Northern Jarrah Forest in Jarrahdale and Dwellingup and learn about the forest’s ecology, immense natural and cultural values and about current threats from mining. You’ll come away equipped with tools and resources to be an active champion for the forests.
OVERVIEW
The Northern Jarrah Forest grows on the Darling Plateau in a belt around 250 kilometres long, from north of Toodyay to south of Collie. This two-day tour 25- 26 June will guide you through sections of the forest around Jarrahdale and Dwellingup which are under particular threat from the proposed expansion of bauxite mining. Find out more here: bit.ly/ProtectNJF
Travelling via bus, the Hotham Valley Railway and on foot, we’ll witness magnificent intact forest, cleared and rehabilitated areas and forests under threat. Along the way you’ll hear from locals who have been campaigning tirelessly against clearing for mining operations from Alcoa, South32 and Rio Tinto. The discussion will be continued over dinner at the Dwelly Pub on Saturday night.
This tour is open to all, whether you’re a long time supporter or have never come to a WAFA event before. Kids are welcome so long as they're able to manage a 6km walk. Please book an individual spot for them for the buses and accommodation. Those who haven’t campaigned with WAFA before are particularly encouraged to come along!
