Introduction to Gardening in Bushfire Country

October 14, 2018 @ 9:30 am – 12:30 pm
The Green Life Soil Co, 178 Farrall Rd, Midvale WA 6056, Australia

Learn how good garden design and landscaping can protect your home from bushfire.
With some basic knowledge about how fires behave and how homes are vulnerable, we can design landscapes and select better species to reduce the risk to your life and home from bushfire.

In this workshop you will learn how a garden and landscape can be designed (or modified) to reduce your bushfire risk. Living in a bushfire prone area comes with its unique challenges, but increased knowledge gives you confidence to take control of your circumstances, understand your bushfire threats and pro-actively reduce your risk.

The session is engaging and interactive. Everyone is provided with a detailed aerial photo of their property. The session will follow the risk management process so participants really understand their opportunities to reduce bushfire risk using garden and landscape design principles.

In this 3 hour workshop you will take away an understanding of:
-How to assess if your home is likely to be exposed to flames, radiant heat or embers
-How to landscape around your home to reduce ember attack, flames and radiant heat
-How to select plants with beneficial characteristics to lower your risk
-How to manage fine fuel loads and fuel structure in your garden
-How to prioritise and where to start

Permaculture Design for Beginners

October 28, 2018 @ 9:30 am – 12:30 pm
The Green Life Soil Co, 178 Farrall Rd, Midvale WA 6056, Australia

A lot of people come to Permaculture from a gardening angle, not realizing what the original question was that started the ball rolling or where Permaculture came from (it was Tasmania by the way), nor understanding the 3 ethics that form the “hub” around which are the commonly used 12 principles of Permaculture.

This workshop is a great introduction for those people who’re considering doing a more in depth 72 hour Permaculture Design Certificate and want to cut their permaculture teeth on the “HOW and WHY” the design system thinking and get their heads around why this works.

Starting with defining Permaculture, we will explore the ethics, principles, sector analysis, zones & element functional analysis and how we put this (literally) into a design. Hands on, standing up, sitting down, this workshop covers all learning styles and invites discussion between participants.

Cost: $39
